Our Story

Spencer and Aurora Swain co-founded Families First in Cabarrus County in response to the overwhelming need for programs to support families that are struggling with addiction, mental health, poverty, and a large demographic of under-served immigrant families and their children. Through innovative practices and drawing on the strengths of the children and families in their programs, Families First is building stronger foundations in fractured parts of our community.

Celebrating 4 Years of Building Family Foundations

4,803 At-risk families benefited from home-visits

The Parents as Teachers program focuses on school readiness, parenting proficiency, family health, and decreasing child abuse and neglect. Families First is a national affiliate of Parents as Teachers and provides services and regular home visitations for at-risk children and families.

132 At-risk children graduated preschool

Three Language Immersion Preschools focus on preparing at-risk children socially, emotionally, and cognitively for a lifelong love of learning.

128 Families recovered together

Celebrating Families is a 16-week educational program that focuses on helping families affected by alcohol and drugs heal and build vital healthy living skills.

78 Parents attended ESL classes, prepared for their GED, and received tutoring

Family Support Services provides classes and tutoring programs to help parents learn English, obtain their GED, enter the workforce, obtain higher paying jobs, and be actively involved in their children’s education.

TAKE ACTION

Together, we can help improve the lives of all under-served and at-risk families in Cabarrus County through education, resources and support.
