PC+ Home-Based Child Care Network

Serving Home-Based Childcare (HBCC) Providers in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties.

About the Network

With support from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and the Truist Foundation, Families First in Cabarrus County organizes three Home-Based Child Care (HBCC) networks across Cabarrus and Mecklenburg, supporting 20–30 providers and 125–225 children each year. Through monthly provider-led meetings, supplies, scholarships, grants, and community events like Families First Fridays with Corning, we strengthen providers as educators, small business owners, and leaders in their communities.

Mission and Values

Empowering childcare providers by creating a community connected with the information, resources, and validation needed to support in-home childcare.

Supporting all in-home childcare providers in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties, regardless of location, type of provider, socio-economic status, race, or sex.

HBCC Network Organizer

Families First in Cabarrus County serves as a hub for three home-based child care (HBCC) networks across Cabarrus and Mecklenburg Counties, supporting 20–30 providers annually who care for 125–225 children. Each month, providers gather for peer-led meetings and receive supplies, coaching, and business stabilization support. We also coordinate scholarships, mini-grants, developmental screenings (ASQ), and peer learning opportunities, ensuring that providers have the tools they need to thrive.

Through partnerships and funding from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and the Truist Foundation, we add capacity-building strategies like workshops, self-assessments, and organizational reviews, while staying rooted in equity with bilingual and culturally responsive approaches.

Our networks also host community events and collaborations—like Families First Fridays with Corning, Inc., where volunteers deliver supplies and encouragement straight to providers’ doors. These regular touchpoints not only reduce isolation but also help elevate providers’ voices locally and statewide.

Looking ahead, Families First is expanding its role as a systems leader and advocate—equipping HBCC and Family, Friend, and Neighbor caregivers, many of them immigrant and Spanish-speaking women, to share their experiences with decision-makers and help shape a stronger, more sustainable child care system.

Programs

ParentChild+

ParentChild+ works with families, caregivers, and communities to support early literacy, school readiness, and early opportunities.

We offer PC+ in English and Spanish. The model is a proven home visiting program focused on early childhood literacy, school readiness, and socio-emotional development.

  • Trained Early Learning Specialists (ELSs) visit families twice weekly over a 2-year period while their child is age 2-4.
  • ELSs model quality parent-child interactions, introduce play activities, and connect families to community resources.
  • Families also receive a free book or educational toy and support weekly, building a library of high-quality books and educational toys.

Kaleidoscope Play & Learn

Play and Learn groups are designed to bring together caregivers of young children (ages birth to five) to learn about child development, learning through play, and provide activities that promote school readiness.

Caregivers along with their children have the opportunity for hands-on experiences with developmentally appropriate toys, materials, books, and learning games.
